The Rivals

The first stage in the development of this new, full-length musical adaptation of the 1775 play by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. The Rivals is a romantic comedy set in that faraway time when everyone wore wigs, spoke in repartee, and hid behind curtains and chairs at the slightest provocation. Miss Lydia Languish wants to throw away her money and live on nothing but love, so Jack Absolute decides to woo her disguised as a penniless poet. An overbearing father, a pompous aunt, and a host of rivals threaten to get in the way, but in the end disguises are doffed, obstacles are removed, and true love wins the day.

The mayor of Wilkes-Barre had built a fake embassy to lure tourists to her city; however, when the State Department and local mafia get involved, her scheme explodes into a comedy of Pennsylvanian proportions.

Then a nasty bit of news changes everything. And when Claire’s reunion with her ex-assistant, Tammy, turns out to be less than nostalgic, Claire and Austin become gossip targets. Will Claire’s steamy sex life hit the front page? Will Austin’s career hit the skids? Cue the entrance of a mysterious stranger, Isabel, who knows just a little bit too much about everyone, and this summer the heat will be in the headlines.
